This (tall) professional couple and their three (tall) children loved their suburb and location, but had zero desire to waste their weekends renovating their run-down house. Their choice to build, rather than renovate, was well and truly a vote for a great lifestyle, and when they found project builders’ display homes too pokey (and way too pricey to amend the plans), they came to GN Williams for a custom built home, with plenty of headroom of course! Most GN Williams homes, including this one, are built for between $500,000 and $1.5million.
This athletic family found project builders’ display homes far too pokey for their five pairs of long legs, so their brief to us in creating them a custom home was to create, literally, a home made to measure. They wished for four good sized bedrooms and two living rooms, with enough space for them to all enjoy the home, plus an easy connection to an outdoor entertaining space.
A couple of extra thoughtful design elements make this home stand out. A partial wall next to the dining area gives a little privacy and a sound barrier to prevent dinner party chatter drifting upstairs, while still retaining the open plan feel. A huge walk-in pantry is hidden behind seemingly standard cupboard doors in the kitchen, while bifold windows above the sink look over the pool and create a lovely indoor/outdoor feel. A recessed set of drawers in a bedroom create an unusual feature and make use of cavity space that would usually just go to waste.
Issues often crop up during the home design and build process, and with this home we had to deal with a request from the council to adjust the floor height. One change in a home build has a domino effect and subsequently, many adjustments need to be made, but we worked through the complications with the clients to come up with a solution that both they and the council were happy with. That’s the beauty of a custom build, by nature it’s adaptable.
